Just Wondering?

How do people like their Garmins? I borrowed one this past weekend and I really liked the real time pace and distance functions.

So what's up with these gadgets? Is it like having a little virtual running coach on your shoulder? Worth the price?

  1. Hi Mike...this is an easy one. I don't think you'll find a runner that doesn't love his or her Garmin. In fact, you'll probably find a lot of people who will refuse to run without their Garmin. It is more than just a training tool...it gives you instant feedback on pace, heart rate, etc and then a whole lot of data for you to analyze after your run too. You can then compare exact paces of how you run hills, how you run in cold weather or hot weather, or how you run in the AM vs PM. I suggest you go to Runners World forum to look under electronics and gadgets and read some of the reviews. You can get a nice 305 for around $150 bucks now a days, so it's not that expensive (just as much as a marathon entry nowadays!) Good luck.

  2. Hi Mike,

I second the Laminator. This weekend I almost missed a race because I had forgotten my Garmin and had to return to get it.
Being in training for longer distances, it really helps focus my training more. On longer stretches, it really helps in sticking to a planned pace.

Right after my shoes, this was the single most useful running gadget I bought.

  3. i love it. i use a forerunner 205 all the time. i can switch it from run mode to bike mode, it even has multisport mode where i can time out my tri's. just being able to know my pace/speed all the time is amazing.

  4. I am still Garmin-less, so I'm no help to you. Sorry.

  5. Hi Mike

I absolutely love my Garmin. I wear it both when I train and when I race. It is like a pacing buddy in the sense that it gives you real time pacing as you are running. You can look at it and say "I'm going to fast or too slow and adjust on the fly." Very, very cool and I can't imagine not having one.

Best of luck with your training.

  6. Thanks for the positive input - looks like it's nearly unanimous: I gotta get a Garmin. I just put an order in for one and will be running a consistent pace by the weekend - very exciting. I'm liking the idea of knowing exactly what the distances are on some offbeat trails I've done infrequently and always wondered about.

Thanks again for the feedback, with this many "yes" votes it's got to be a good move.

  7. I'm in love with Garmin. Garmin and I go nearly everywhere together. When Garmin isn't around, I feel like a part of me is missing. I hold Garmin near and dear to my heart. Garmin gives me everything I want...and then some. Just treats me right. ;)
